“be back soon: unit 13 going-away (for a while) party” at Videotage, Hong Kong
This audiovisual performance, developed in collaboration with the black sea and presented at be back soon: unit 13 going-away (for a while) party at Videotage, Hong Kong, explores live visuals as a responsive and performative image practice. Rather than presenting a fixed sequence, the moving images were generated, recomposed, and transformed in real time in dialogue with sound.
The visual system was built in TouchDesigner using short animated loops as modular image elements. During the performance, these loops were manipulated live and processed through visual effects, allowing the image to remain unstable, rhythmic, and open to improvisation. In this way, the visuals did not function simply as accompaniment, but as an active component of the performance, shaping its atmosphere and temporal flow together with the sound.
The project reflects my ongoing interest in live cinema and expanded animation, particularly in how simple image materials can be reactivated through performance. By treating animation loops as live input rather than fixed content, the work approaches moving image as something contingent, performative, and relational. The audiovisual performance became a temporary space in which sound and image continuously adjusted to one another in the moment of presentation.
